As a certain furniture store opens in Southampton, and Abba plays a significant role in the Bursledon Players’ pantomime Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood, the Swedes would seem to be currently flavour of the month. And, love them or loathe them, Abba’s songs have a cheery sing-along quality which added a definite fizz to proceedings.
Somewhat rough around the edges, Robin Hood... nevertheless had an infectious charm and a warmth to which the audience responded to generously.
While it was sometimes difficult to hear some cast members, and one or two seemed overawed by everything, everyone was obviously enjoying themselves.
Ben Humphreys gave a confident and amusing turn as the Dame Nurse Molly Coddle, Michael Hlavaty made a very effective stab at the role of the baddie – the Sheriff of Nottingham – and Samantha Fergie impressed as the ever cheerful “Dangerous” Dave.

When Pip and Penny are being looked after by their guardian, the wicked Sheriff of Rottingham, things start to go wrong for them. Nurse Molly Coddle and young Maid Marion do their best to protect them but they still need to call upon the assistance of Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men.
Acted by an amateur youth group from in and around Bursledon, this is a bright and cheerful performance bringing in many of the the songs from Mamma Mia and being led by two unlikely fairies in the guise of Agnetha and Frida from Abba!
